We are great supporters of industry based learning and are pleased to offer nascent designers a taste of the built environment industry.
Most recently, we have hosted school leaver Connor Mashlan (aspiring marine engineer) and are about to welcome Ben Donnely (future architect) next week. Below are a few words from Connor:
"As the ‘work experience kid’ coming to Green Leaf, I really had no idea what to expected. I had kind of thought that I would be getting coffee and photocopying stuff for the week. However, this was not the case. My week at Green Leaf was the complete opposite.
My first day at I was a tad nervous. It was the first time I had done anything of the sort. At the same time I was really looking forward to what the week could bring for me. Being around people that worked in the industry that I wanted to get into all week was going to be a great experience. As I was introduced to the staff I found that they were all very friendly and willing to help me out in any way possible. My first task was to be welcomed to the wonderful world of AccuRate. It was a bit interesting to get my head around at first, but once I got the hang of things, it was really interesting to see how such small changes in a building’s design can create so many changes to the sustainability of a building. It was a good first day.
Day 2 was a very big day. Starting with some more AccuRate (a computer program used for modelling energy use) followed by going to site to the Caxton St. project. It was extremely interesting to see the kinds of things that people like Aaron (Snr. Electrical Engineer) are looking for when going to visit a site. The next thing on the schedule was a design team meeting of the Transcity TCC. It was a truly amazing experience to get to sit in on one of these meetings and see how all the disciplines come together. It gave me a great idea of what to look forward to in later years.
Day 3, 4 and 5 were much the same as days 1 and 2. With many interesting research tasks to complete it was a very pack 3 days. And I learnt a lot about different systems and what information is needed for a project to come together.
All up it was an amazing week that I would always look back on for help when I’m picking my Uni causes. I would like to thank everyone at Green Leaf for putting up with my 100s of questions throughout that week and giving me a really interesting insight into the world of engineers.
Cheers for everything,
Connor."
