Education is one of the basic tenants for a country development. The extended economic crisis in Indonesia has increased the need for affordable and effective educational facilities for the public.

The National Learning Centre is co-located with Coca Cola’s bottling facility in Cibitung, an outer suburb of Jakarta. The building is a 2-storey structure with a GFA of 2564m2. The sway-frame reinforced concrete structure has infill masonry cladding (consistent with local construction techniques), and is supported in relatively weak clay by high-level footings. Lateral design actions were derived from the local Indonesian earthquake code, however the structure was analysed, designed and detailed to AS 3600 Concrete Structures .

The building’s structural performance was put to the test just after completion, when in November 1998 an undersea earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale occurred in the Indonesian archipelago.
